Selected Shorts is the short film DVD label founded by the International Short Film Festival Leuven. It releases a number of national and international short film compilations every year, and thus aims to promote the short film as well as encourage its distribution.

Short film is a non-commercial genre, and in a small country such as ours, its proceeds never pay back the costs of its production. This “handicap” is a virtue at the same time, since the short film is free from any commercial or other business related concerns as such. The intrinsic quality of the film is the only thing that really matters. Nationally as well as internationally, hundreds of very strong short films are produced every year, but as yet, they hardly ever succeed in reaching a big audience.

As it is, the short film has no place in the regular, commercial distribution circuit. You will hardly ever find them in a regular cinema. Short film festivals are about the only place to see them.

Selected Shorts wants to promote the short film and uses its expenses to work all the possibilities the DVD has to offer. Not only do the high picture quality and the relatively low production costs of a DVD enable quality releases at low prices, but it also offers the opportunity to organise public large-screen exhibitions (provided that a financial settlement is agreed upon with respect to the public exhibition rights (More info)).

At the same time, Selected Shorts wants to offer schools the possibility to use short films in school or in individual classes, since the genre is especially suitable to be used as didactic material, either as an introduction to reflection on the medium of film in general, or as an introduction to discussion of specific themes.
